I spotted this arch whilst on my travels, and at first it may appear a fairly familiar scene, but it tells a story. It was taken in a very "working class" area of old terraced properties that are quite small inside. The arch leads to a communal yard, someone even has their washing hung out for everyone to inspect as they pass. The yard leads to the gardens, everyone has their own strip but there's no privacy. Now look at the door at the end of the yard. It's obviously been the subject of extreme frustrations, and better the door than a wife or child, but the tensions in that house must be palpable. Cramped living, lower incomes and a busy road right on your doorstep. They may be double glazed, have indoor bathrooms and central heating, but a cage is still a cage however gilded.
